(Telugu Vocabulary Contest)

 

This contest’s primary objective is to encourage the improvement of knowledge and understanding of Telugu words among the second generation children of Telugu origin outside of Andhra Pradesh. This contest was conceived and organized for the first time in Detroit in 2003 by Sri Koneru Srinivas and Sri Bandla Hanumaiah of the TANA Executive Committee (2003-2005). The contest has become an instant success with both the parents and the children not only in Detroit but also in other major cities across the country over the last two years. This contest is going to be conducted at the national level during the 2005 TANA Conference to be held in Detroit. Following are the rules for the competition:

 

  1. There will be four levels of competition for different age and expert group. They are: 3-4, 5-10, and 11-17 year old children living in the US for three or more years and 10-17 years of age children who immigrated from Andhra Pradesh within the last 3 years. All ages are as of the qualifying competition day at the local level (see below).
  2. Only the winners and runners of the competitions held at TANA-affiliated local Telugu Associations are qualified to compete at the TANA level. If the eligible contestants are not able to attend the TANA level competition, the local association that conducted the competition can name the alternates among the top finishers from each group. It is the responsibility of the local association to verify the age and eligibility.
  3. Setup: All the contestants will be on the stage each equipped with a microphone. Facing them will be the Quizmaster, Judge, Scorer, and the Timekeeper. The position of the contestants will be by the luck of the draw. The contestant drawing the lowest number will receive the first question and the next one goes to the person on the left of the first one.
  4. Competition:
    1. The contestant will be given a Telugu word for translation into English within 60 sec. Upon correct translation, the contestant should frame a Telugu sentence using the word within 15 sec. If the contestant who was given the question first could not answer within 60 sec, the question goes to the person on the left (clockwise) and must be answered within 2 sec. If this contestant also could not answer, the question continues to go to the contestants on the left until all the contestants had a chance to answer. If no one gets the answer, the question goes to the audience. Except for the contestant who got the question first, all subsequent contestants have to answer immediately and also have to say the sentence without any delay. If the contestant who translated the word could not come up with the sentence, the chance ends there and doesn’t go to the next person.
    2. The second question goes to the contestant on the left. The Telugu half of the round is complete when all contestants get a first chance to answer a question.
    3. The English half of the round goes exactly as described in the above two steps, except that English words are to be translated into Telugu words. The sentences constructed for bonus point must be in Telugu and use the translated Telugu word.
    4. The second round starts with the Telugu half followed by the English half from the other end of the contestants and proceeds to the right (anticlockwise). The third round proceeds exactly like the first starting from the first contestant and proceeds clockwise.
    5. With each round the difficulty of the words is expected to increase.
    6. At the end of the three rounds, the scores are tallied and First, Second, and Third places are determined from the highest scorers. In case of a tie for any or all three positions, tie-breaking rounds will be conducted only to the tied teams to determine their places. Each tie-breaking round consists of both the Telugu and English halves as described above.
  5. Scoring:
    1. The contestant who received the question first scores two points for correct translation and two points for a complete meaningful sentence using the word.
    2. All the second chance answers get only one point each for translation and the sentence.
